The AN-94 is a burst fire weapon meaning that it is suited to mid-long range firefights, which it performs really well, and can in the hands of a skilled player, be used as a rather effective counter-sniper weapon. Taking the AN-94 to close range is not recommended as the burst delay will prove troublesome against other weapons that have faster rates of fire.
It's best to equip a fully automatic secondary weapon such as the Uzi or the MP5 to deal with close quarter combat situations and surprise attacks which the AN-94 is suitable.
